The construction of Xiamen North railway station (hereinafter referred to as “the new Xiamen North railway station”), the main station building of the highly concerned new Fuzhou Xiamen High Speed Railway, ushered in a key node – in the morning of October 8, with the last piece of 2400 ton steel truss lifted off and successfully erected, the construction of the steel roof of the main station building of the new Xiamen North railway station was completed in full, 23 days ahead of the planned construction period.
In order to accelerate the project progress, during the National Day holiday, the construction unit China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) had 120 management personnel and 1632 workers stationed at the front line, working in two shifts to seize time and speed up the progress, ensuring that the construction was completed ahead of schedule.

The steel Structural health monitoring system monitors the whole construction process in real time
Overlooking from the air, the wavy steel roof of the main station building of the new Xiamen North railway station is graceful and magnificent. It is reported that the main station building of the newly built Xiamen North railway station is the largest wave shaped station building under construction in China. The steel truss of the station building has a north-south span of about 267 meters and an east-west span of about 143 meters. It is composed of 22705 rods. The largest diameter of the rod is 0.8 meters, and the smallest diameter of the rod is only 0.1 meters. There are about 54222 splicing sections. The total length of the welds exceeds 14 kilometers. The construction complexity is rare in China.
“We independently developed the ‘steel Structural health monitoring system’ to monitor the stress, deformation and temperature changes in the whole process of steel structure construction in real time, further improving the safety and stability of steel structures,” said Li Yanchang, director of China Railway Construction Project.
The difference between the highest and lowest points of the roof is 24 meters, which is equivalent to the height of an 8-story building – the height difference of this large wavy roof sets a record for the height difference of houses on the entire Fuzhou Xiamen high-speed railway station. Zhao Zhongzhong, Chief Engineer of China Railway Construction Project, introduced that the steel roof of the main station building weighs 7423 tons and is supported by six giant flowering columns located on both sides of the waiting hall. “After completion, there will be no pillar blocking the middle of the 20000 square meter waiting hall
To ensure the safety of train operation, it is necessary to work closely in subway tunnels
According to the introduction, the steel structure construction of the new Xiamen North railway station is mainly divided into three parts: the steel roof of the new station building, the steel roof of the transfer center, and the high and low canopy of the platform. It is characterized by large span, complex and changeable structure, great assembly difficulty, and high welding precision requirements. The total steel consumption is 32000 tons.
Keeping close to the running subway is another huge challenge faced by the project during the construction process. “Under the central axis of the main station building of the newly-built Xiamen North railway station is Xiamen Metro Line 1 in operation. The total overlapping length between the subway tunnel and the foundation slab of the station building is 250 meters, and the distance between the two is only 3 meters.” The relevant responsible person said that in order to maximize the structural safety of the subway tunnel, the construction party covered the tunnel with a thick concrete “safety cover” by setting coping piers, enclosure piles, uplift piles and other measures around the tunnel, Ensuring the safety of over 300 trains per day.
As the main station of Fuzhou Xiamen North railway station, the newly-built Xiamen North railway station is located on the north side of the existing Xiamen North Railway Station, with a total floor area of 250000 square meters and a platform scale of 7 sets and 15 lines. It is expected to be open to traffic in June next year.
The new station continues the architectural style of the existing Xiamen North railway station, highlighting the design of swallow tail ridge elements, echoing the characteristics of architectural settlements in southern Fujian, while creating a wave shape with an arc steel structure, highlighting the cultural characteristics of the “Maritime Silk Road”. Next, the new Xiamen North railway station will be fully transferred to the construction stage of metal roof and decoration of the main station building.
